Carefree land response
Wendy Mattes, September 26, 2022
This article addresses prior opinions regarding the preservation value of this state land from the perspective of a Carefree neighbored. She presents a strong view that plain undeveloped Sonoran desert land has a very high value in itself besides the avoidance of increased consumption of water beyond the means of the region.
In response to the letter to the editor dated 9/20/22, “Facts Regarding State Land in Carefree”, we understand the narrative that the 48 acres of Sonoran Desert bordered by Cave Creek Road and Stagecoach Road is not a candidate for “Open Space Preserve”. It apparently doesn’t earn enough points, as decided by the Desert Foothills Land Trust, to make it worthy of preserving since there are no petroglyphs on this land, and no river running through it.
However, we believe this land IS a prime candidate for an “Open Space Park” (and no, not a park with irrigated lawns). It is an ideal location for a park where residents can hike, walk our dogs, ride our bikes, and simply enjoy the beauty of the natural Sonoran Desert.
Of course, it is good to preserve land which has significant archaeological resources and significant riparian areas. We support the effort of DFLT to preserve this important land. But, the land north of Carefree is not accessible for residents and visitors to visit, hike or ride bikes. That land is too sensitive for public access.
So we need this 48-acres to be preserved.
We have great concerns about this land being purchased by developers. It will destroy the last remaining big parcel of natural desert in our town. Development will require precious water resources. We are now in a mega-drought. Arizona’s share of the Colorado River water is being cut by 21%. It is irresponsible to be considering another huge development in our town, when the land could be treasured as it is, without using more water.
We appeal to the Town of Carefree to purchase this land and designate it as Town Park before it’s too late.
